Adult day centers positive for caregiver and loved one

When it comes to being a caregiver for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s, an adult day center is a huge help in daily life.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, adult day centers, such as Sharing the Caring at Third Street Alliance, provide a much needed break during the day for a caregiver to rest, run errands, or do other tasks.

The break can help ward off exhaustion for the caregiver as well.

If the caregiver works during the day, an adult day service program provides an opportunity to balance a job with caregiving duties. Sharing the Caring is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and transportation can be arranged for your loved one. We also provide a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack to our clients.

Adult day centers and services provide the chance for your loved one to be social and participate in activities. Sharing the Caring uses the Montessori Method in dementia care, allowing the use of all five senses to activate and stimulate their minds throughout the day.

Activities they take part in include arts and crafts, chair exercises, puzzles, memory games, baking and cooking, motor skill games, iPad use, intergenerational activities with our Learning Center children, therapy dog visits, music therapy and gardening.

The Alzheimer’s Association notes that persons with dementia often need time to adjust to the experience when they first start coming into the center, and they resist at first. But after a short time, they become acclimated and enjoy coming to the program.
