New home construction and restoring old buildings into luxury apartments has been the big boom in the Lehigh Valley. For many families, this new housing trend represents a real challenge. For families who are struggling with homelessness, the challenges are even greater.
In 2019, Third Street Alliance began working diligently to help address the challenges of affordable housing, by seeking innovative solutions, focusing on the Allentown/ Bethlehem/Easton area. With funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the agency rolled out and maintains a very successful Rapid Rehousing Program.
The program has effectively demonstrated that short and mid-term rental assistance is a practical tool in helping people, dealing with homelessness, obtain and retain safe and stable rental housing.
This year, Third Street Alliance has secured new funding for additional homelessness prevention and diversion services to individuals and families in the Slate Belt. In doing so, we will be the bridge between landlords with available rental units and qualified households. We will work with them to ensure they have a financial plan in place, provide monetary assistance for security deposits and monthly rent and serve to help with landlord-tenant issues.
