Third Street Alliance “Breaks Ground” on Pool-to-School Project

After sitting unused and drained for more than 10 years, the decommissioned pool at Third Street Alliance for Women & Children will be undergoing a major transformation into classroom space for the agency’s early learning center.

Third Street Alliance will be kicked off the redesign project with a “ground breaking” event on May 23.

The new classroom space will add 47 spaces to our early learning program, The Learning Center, and create seven full-time, living-wage jobs, helping Third Street Alliance to serve more families in the Easton and Lehigh Valley area.

“For more than 50 years, Third Street Alliance’s aquatic program taught generations of Easton children to swim, providing a venue for countless hours of enrichment and fun,” said Alisa Baratta, Executive Director of Third Street Alliance.

The pool was decommissioned in 2012 due to mounting costs associated with keeping the aging system running, as well as ADA compliance issues.

“We are happy that this space can now be reimagined in a way that allows us to continue to educate and enrich the lives of children in our community,” Baratta said.

Third Street Alliance has contracted with Boyle Construction to complete the project, which was designed by Alloy5 Architecture. The work includes filling in the pool and turning the space into three classrooms, as well as reinforcing the roof to the existing structure. This will allow for any future addition above the space. The adaptive reuse project will also include three new bathrooms, two offices, storage space, and the installation of an ADA lift.

At an estimated cost of about $2 million, the project will be funded through a variety of sources, including financing, public funding, grants, and private fundraising. During today’s event, City of Easton Mayor Sal Panto will be presenting a $150,000 gift for the project. The funds come from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
